Dr. Bill Cosby Keynote Speaker at African American Education Civil Rights Agenda Forum Oct. 28th.
LOS ANGELES, CA – A community forum will be held at Maranatha Community Church, 3800 Martin Luther King Blvd., from 10 am to 1 pm on Saturday, October 28th, 2006. The local “Education Is A Civil Right” committee, consists of professional educators and community leaders who have collaborated with state and national African American leaders and Dr. Cosby to develop an African American educational agenda.
The growing achievement gap for African American students has resulted in lower graduation rates, higher drop-out rates, declining college enrollments and an alarming proportion of our men in prison. Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream, for which so many fought and sacrificed, is in danger of being lost to this generation of students. Today’s African American student needs a supportive and shared leadership, along with practical solutions that help find the path to transformation.
The four core issues of the forum are:
1. To promote educational policies and practices that advance rather than impede educational excellence.
2. Improve high school graduation rates for all African American students.
3. Improve educational outcomes equally for both African American male and female students.
4. Provide support for parents and families of underachieving African American students.
Dr. Cosby will engage parents, students, community leaders and educators as well as other stakeholders concerned about the underachievement of African American students. The initiative and its action plan will be unveiled at the forum. Seating is limited and for reservations or more information call Michael Dennis at 310-680-5244 or visit www.educationisacivilright.com
