First of all, I'm not going to give all of the details of my incident, because I don't want the cop that was supposed to handle it to harrass me any more than he already has, but my story is 100 times worse than what happened to the grad student.

I actually had a guy change directions (180 degrees) in order attempt to run me over (literally) and then get out of his car and attack me as I tired to flee from being run over. Incredibly, all of this happened in an area full of security cameras trained on the spot where everything took place. My attacker then lied his ass off to the police until I pointed out all of the security cameras in the area. at that point, his head slumped, his bravado disappeared, and the police who had responded to the call began to listen to my side of the story...

Over the next few days, I found out who owned each and every security camera, and gave all of the information that I'd compiled to the officer in charge of the investigation. Guess what? After trying to blame the whole thing on me, then threatening me, he told me that none of the cameras had footage showing the incident because they were all off at the time. We're talking about a half dozen cameras owned by four different entities!

Bottom line? The next time you have a problem with a motorist, let the police know that you are serious by using your cell phone to call a lawyer. Don't have a lawyer? Find one like this guy http://www.bicyclelawyer.com/ and keep his card in your wallet. Oh, and let the motorist and the officer know that you want to press charges and don't let it drop no matter what they say. Cops thrive on intimidation, so take the initiative, call an attorney immediately, and let the officer know that people who brave the streets of LA on bicycles are anything but pushovers.

gotta add this, a comment from another blog that picked up this story -

bobbo sez " also consider a follow up action with the PD. The officer’s behavior towards a citizen sounds unacceptable. Most PD’s have a review board who will follow up and recommend disciplinary action in some cases. If for nothing else than to establish a pattern of behavior for this officer it will be worth it. Anyway, you already got the ticket, so now he has more to lose than you do. Good luck. Fight the fight."

true that.

well written. maybe running down grad students isn't such a great idea. oh wait, running down cyclists, not such a great idea. when the f'k did people start forgetting that we all rode bikes as kids? didn't suvbitch notice all the cute europeans on bikes when she was in italy on vacation? people are stupid. cops are armed and dangerous. trust is a common misconception. glad that our writer made it out of this alive and not in jail.
