Finally you can get rid of your bike tubes that you have had laying around your apartment or in the garage and feel good about it because you will help some kids, athletes, and even the environment.
Unfortunately we have millions of scrap tires ending up in landfills when we know that all that rubber tubing could be put to great use. Rubber can be recycled and reused in countless ways. I’ve seen amazing wallets that were made out of bike tubes, I’ve sat in some very comfortable chairs, that were built out of bike rims and inner tubes, and I found online some necklace designs, wristbands, belt, bags & shoes, etc.
There are countless of fashion design stores out there that use recycled bike tubes and the best part of these designs is that anything made out of tubes is water proof.
However, even if you are not feeling creative in making things out of your old bicycle tubes, the great news is that you can do good by recycling them.
LA. Performance Bike, is teaming up with Liberty Tire to sponsor the Bike Tube Blow-Out next weekend at Performance’s new store in Woodland Hills, and the refurbished Santa Monica shop.
Anyone who brings in their flat or unused tubes, from July 23-25, will receive a $5 in store credit, and can trade in up to 3 tubes for a total of $15. The old tubes are then shipped off to be recycled and put to good use.
This program started this past April and according to BusinessWire.com “the bike tubes will be collected by Liberty Tire Recycling, the nation’s largest collector of used and scrap tires, and reused as mulch for playgrounds, athletic fields, railroad ties and weightlifting plates, among other applications. The company collects and recycles nearly one-third of all of America’s annual scrap tire material, with a collection network that covers more than 60,000 locations in the U.S. In the past seven years, Liberty Tire has cleaned up more than 150 dump sites littered with nearly 40 million scrap tires—more than any other organization.”
These “Blow-Outs” have been hugely popular in other cities, and the hope is that bringing it to LA will mean even more saved material from the city’s landfills.
So gather all your tubes and take them down to either these two stores to be put to good use. And next time you take your kids to the playground and walk on that rubbery ground, or you run some laps around a rubbery jogging track, know that you helped your community and reduced waste from the landfills.
