City Council And Mayor Recognize Bike Winter!

February 4th, 2007 · No Comments

Councilmember Eric Garcetti, District 13, and Antonio Villaraigosa sign BikeWinter 2007 Resolution, that is seconded by Councilmember Tom LaBonge, District 4, and Attested by City Clerk Frank T. Martinez.

WHEREAS, BikeWinter opens on February 2nd and for two weeks through February 14th, local cyclists “post and host” bike-related events including social rides, cheap-date rides, serious races, bike-in movies, blood-donor rides and everything in between, all intended to celebrate and promote the Los Angeles cycling culture; and

WHEREAS, this celebration is to state the fact that in Los Angeles, “getting there” is as much a part of the adventure as “being there”; and

WHEREAS, there are five events being hosted in Atwater Village, Echo Park, Silver Lake, Hollywood and, of course the Griffith Observatory. Also, an Eastside/Westside ride to Santa Monica; and

WHEREAS, BikeWinter organizers provide the framework and anyone can “post and host” by creating their own bicycle-themed events, posting them on BikeBoom.com and hosting them anywhere in the Los Angeles area: and

WHEREAS, BikeWinter’s origins lie in the BikeSummer tradition, which originated in San Francisco in 1999 and has traveled to Chicago, Vancouver, Portland, New York, Seattle and Los Angeles. The impact of BikeSummer 2005 was so dramatic that LA organizers channeled the energy into BikeWinter:

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that by the adoption of this resolution the Los Angeles City Council along with the Mayor hereby commend BIKEWINTER for recognizing the efforts of the local cycling culture to improve the quality of life in our community by promoting alternative forms of transportation.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing
resolution was adopted by the Council
of the City of Los Angeles at its meeting
held February 2, 2007
