Eileen Golden “Pop-Outs”

I stumbled onto this artist reception at Sabor Y Cultura. Sabor Y Cultura is a coffee shop in East Hollywood that has art shows, music, spoken art and of course coffee.

was walking down the street to pick up some food from the late night grocery store and I spotted a bunch of people in the coffee shop smoozing, eating cheese and crackers and drinking wine, while they were looking at some new exhibit. As I walked in and looked at her first print, I was transformed into another world.

A world that we all know. I was transformed back to my childhood. And even though this artist/actress is originally from New York, she managed to take me back to my childhood in communist Hungary.

Her illustrations are a mix of pencil, ink and watercolor and her work is so clean and precise that I was drawn into her art because of it. I was drawn physically into her pictures until my husband tapped me on the shoulder and said, “hon’, your nose-print is now part of her artwork.”

All her pictures include little figures glued onto the frame and onto the glass and the knick-knacks are part of the theme, part of the work. You have to go and see it for yourself. Some of the artwork reminded me of old school books. Some reminded me of my grandma’s kitchen. Some of the figurines I wanted to smell and chew on (don’t ask me. Go and see!) Some of the artwork reminded me of old trunks in the attic, some (like the image above) reminded me of family time on a Sunday evening.

Eileen Golden is a truely gifted artists, who makes a great team with her husband, who was there all night long, talking to people, introducing them to Eileen, asking for feedback and inviting you to eat and drink. And to top it off, even though this fantastic couple has been in California for about 5 years, they both are car-free! Ride your bike out to East Hollywood for a cup of Joe and take a glance at Eileens work and be inspired.
