Four years ago the Pulitzer Prize-winning Suzan-Lori Parks sat down and committed to writing a play a day for the next 365 days. The world premiere of this play cycle is being performed as a yearlong national festival simultaneously in major cities and communities around the country.
Smart Gals Production is putting this weeks 365 Days/365 Plays together, but they decided to do something very different from the other 365 productions. They are holding a FREE nightly writing workshop until Friday at Mama’s Hot Tamales on 2122 7th St. in Los Angeles and the performances of this weeks 365 will be at MacArthur Park.
The workshop schedule is from August 6th to the 10th from 7 pm to 9 pm, and the performances of the plays are on August 11th and 12th in the Park at 10 am, 12 noon, and 2 pm.
I went to the writing workhop tonight and I wish I could have been there the other nights, it was so much fun. I arrived there with angst, nervous, and verklemp. After 2 hours of writing exercises, I left invigorated, elevated and inspired. The people were super nice, the teachers were very professional and very good and the tamales were delicious.
There are two more evenings left of the writing workshop. To find out more go to SmartGals.org.
And if you want to see the plays this weekend, come out to MacArthur Park and make it a day with the family. The performances will be in the park, spread out and “incognito.” You will discover the plays while you stroll around the park, and you will discover MacArthur Park as well.
