I’m usually skeptic when I receive a video link about the Rights & Rules of cyclists. (I’m not seeing any video being circulated around the web about the Rights & Rules of drivers, and they are the ones who kill over 40,000 people a year.)
But this video is very well done and it really helps anyone who rides a bike in California to understand the positioning and the safe way of riding of cyclists. The only problem I have about this video is that the guy is wearing funky rider clothes as opposed to real street wear. But that is my gripe. Now go check out this video and get out and ride your bike!

“Cyclists fare best when they behave and are treated like vehicles.” This is true, but we have a lot more control over how we behave than how we are treated. “Preventing” unsafe passing by controlling the lane is unfortunately not really possible. “Discouraging” would be a better word I think. 99/100 times the driver behind you gets the hint, but every so often some yahoo decides to buzz by, frustrated at being held back by a bike. And then what are we supposed to do? 1/100 of the time may not sound like much, but it’s once every couple of days of urban biking for me, which is way to frequent to be comfortable or safe. If only we all had helmet mounted cameras like these guys, and could record and report the license numbers of the above-mentioned yahoos!

Wow. Very good video. I have to admit, often out of fear, and just not knowing whether I had to right to or not, I don’t ride as if I’m another vehicle. I usually find my self riding as far to the right as possible and cheating by using sidewalks and stuff, this video has given me a lot more confidence to just ride my bike on the street as if I was a car.

This was a great video! I was glad to find that I’ve been doing generally the right things (to the annoyance of many a driver). Like Fred, though, fear has kept me from riding like I’m a vehicle, too. It’s tough and kind of scary out there.
First (maybe second) time at this blog. Love it.

I’m glad you like the Rights and Duties of Cyclists video. FYI, Brian was wearing “bike clothes” and I was wearing “street clothes” (polo shirt and shorts) because we knew the club riders would think I’m inappropriately dressed, and urban riders would thin the same of Brian! I guess we found the middle ground: everyone complains about one or the other of us!!
