Tips for the Heat

July 28th, 2006 · No Comments

I hope you all are doing well, and can manage the heat.  I went this week to the CPAB (Community Police Advisory Board) and they were talking about the two young women who were attacked on Monday night.  These two women were in their early to mid 20s, and they left their sliding window open, to get some air into their stuffy apartment.  Three guys climbed through the window, demanded money, and then assaulted both women.

This could have been prevented, if they would have closed their windows.  I know there are apartments and houses, that don’t have A/C, so it’s difficult to keep cool.  Stephen and I try our best to bear the heat without the A/C, but sometimes it just has to be turned on. Don’t compromise your safety!

- If you don’t have air conditioning, invest some money in some box-fans.

- Leave your window open only at about 6 inches, and put a stick into the slider part, so nobody will be able to slide the window further than you opened it.  You can get a stick at Home Depot, and they can cut it for you for free.  Make sure you measure the length that you want.

- When you’re not at home, lock all your windows, and draw the shades.  It will keep your apartment cool.

- Drink a lot of water!

- Turn the lights off that you’re not using.  The lights heat up the place.

- Turn off electronics that you’re not using.  Printers, computers, tv, and dvd players emit a lot of heat.

- Hang some moist towel in front of your fan.  It will cool your room some more.

- Go to some cooling places.  Recreation and Parks has some places open for the public, and they give out free water as well.

- Check on your older and disabled neighbors.  Check, that they have water, and take them to a cooling station!

I compiled some more information for you that will help you through the hot summer season.  You’ll find some phone numbers, cooling station, claim form, and more here.
